EMDEN SAILS

GIVEN ENTHUSIASTIC SEND OFF WELLINGTON TOMORROW There were enthusiastic scenes at Central Wharf yesterday evening at six o’clock when the German cruiser Emden put to sea. The wharf had been thrown open to the public half an hour before the vessel sailed, and a large crowd had assembled. A reception was held on board during the afternoon and immediately it concluded the vessel was made ready for sea. She is expected to arrive at Wellington at about eight o’clock tomorrow morning. A party from the cruiser was entertained at luncheon by the Optimists’ Club in the Y.M.C.A. yesterday. The Rev. C. Chandler, club president, and Mr. R. A. Kenner, Dominion president, extended a welcome to the guests and referred to the spirit of goodwill shown since the Emden’s arrival. In returning thanks an ofiieer said the crew had been received as brothers, and the attitude of the people had made a deep impression on them. The following wireless message from Captain von Arnauld was r% ceived from the Mayor, Mr. G. Baiidon, this morning: “Leaving your beautiful town and splendid harbour I wish to convey to you my greatest appreciation and my most sincere gratitude for the thoughtful reception to me and all members of my ship. I wish your city all the prosperity which it so richly deserves.”
