Kidaides Backed For the Two Cups

V.R.C. GRAND NATIONALS MELBOURNE, June 2G. One of the horses receiving a fair share of attention for both the Caulfield Cup and the Melbourne Cup is the South Australian-owned Kidaides. This gelding has performed with remarkable consistency during each of the last two seasons. Kidaides has B.S in the Caulfield Cup, and one pound less in the Melbourne Cup. He is also in the A.J.C. Epsom Handicap at 8.6, and the Metropolitan at 8.7. Kidaides is a six-year-old gelding, by the Aus-trian-bred horse, Aides, who won the Bagot Handicap, and the V.R.C. Governor’s Plate. In the four seasons he has figured on the turf Kidaides has contested 48 races for 12 wins, five seconds and 10 thirds. ; This season he lias started 17 times | for four wins, four seconds and five j thirds. Last season he was mostly restricted to races in the provinces of South Australia. This year he won the V.A.T.C. Woodcliff Handicap, the Warwick Farm Autumn Cup. equalling the Australasian record time of 2.29 T for one mile and a-half, and the Adelaide Birthday Cup, a mile and five furlongs, where he put up a race record. Kidaides was also second in the Australian Cup and third in the Sydney Cup. He is known in Adelaide as the “wonder horse,” and this good record entitles him to that distinction. Grand National Betting With a race meeting in progress at Sandown Park today, Grand National operations are quieter. Tiki is still firm favourite for the Hurdles (run on July 6), in which Mr. L. K. S. MacKinnon’s latest purchase, Kentle, is now a firm second favourite, and has shortened a trifle since yesterday. Should Kentle win to-day’s hurdles, he may seriously challenge Tiki for favouritism. Valbee has plenty of admirers, and Epical is firm in the market. Conjurer has tightened up a little as a result of his good gallop at Caulfield yesterday. Chaumont rules the quotes in the Steeples (run on July 13) with Cobbon next. The latter was not hurt when ho fell on Saturday, and has Doen working usefully at Caulfield since Mosstrooper has been galloping well, and he should be hard to beat at Moonee Valley next- Saturday. Epergne’s admirers ore confident about his ability over Flemington. Sandhurst keeps well in the market. In today’s discussions Epical and Johnny Cake were supported for £2.000 Kentle and Chaumont £2,500 and Kentle and Mosstrooper for £3OO. The double of Tiki and Chaumont is at a short price, and backers who were inclined to support the pair, have not been over active owing to the quote available. The double of Conjurer and Chaumont was backed for £2,500.
