DOUBLE TRACK
HOROTIU TO FRANKTON JUNCTION SECTION IN OPERATION Trains are now running over the railway duplication from Horotiu to Frankton Junction. This latest section was officially opened on Sunday, when the signals were tested by a special train. Soon afterward a goods train from Frankton Junction to Auckland travelled over the new line and everj thing was in perfect working order. Speed is restricted to 30 miles an hour until the permanent way is properly settled, but this restriction will be necessary only for a few weeks. The duplication will relieve the congestion and will help in speeding up train times between Auckland and the Waikato. In busy seasons, when large quantities of coal and goods are on the move, passenger trains are frequently held up for crossings, but this should not happen now that there is a double line in operation. It is the intention of the department to duplicate the whole of the line from Auckland to Frankton Junction. Whether it will be proceeded with this coming year is a question which may be decided by the Government when its next railway statement is presented to the House The question of available funds will be the prevailing factor in the decision.
