AUCTION AT ONEHUNGA!

DR. S. L. HARKE’S EFFECTS SOLD

Many rare and valuable antiques j were sold at Onehunga on Monday j during the auction sale of Dr. S. L. : Harke’s effects. I “It was the most enthusiastic sale j I have ever held,” said Mr. T. B. Arthur, of the firm of Richard Arthur, who conducted the auction, “and the prices were splendid.” Dr. Harke, who has left for England, possessed a good deal of antique furniture, much of which had been in the family for generations. An early Georgian mahogany table ! brought £43, and a set of Sheraton j dining chairs sold at £ 7 each. A French card table went for £4O. A small Buhl writing table, a very fine piece of furniture, realised £23 10s. and a small Buhl occasional table brought the same price. Dr. Harke had collected some fine old clocks, and these all brought good prices. Three grandfather clocks were sold at £37 10s, £34 and £2B, respectively. A brass hall clock, of the Cromwell period, brought £3l. and another small French clock, in a mahogany case, found a buyer at £l4. Two Jacobean chairs, in oak, realised £7 each, and a Sheraton tray was sold for £l3. A tapestry wood-box, with brass mounts, brought £l2. Several Georgian cut-glass fingerbowls sold from 29s to £3 2s 6d each, old crystal tumblers from 7s to 11s each, a silver porringer of Victoria’s time went for £4 10s, and two Sheffield plate entree dishes £8 15s each. A collection of sporting prints found many admirers, and competition for them was keen. They realised from £1 to £ 4 10s each. A set of London cries went for 31s each. Japanese prints, on rice paper, brought £1 each, and an oil painting, “Falling Leaves,” by Alfred Helsby, found a buyer at £ 50. Many other pictures were sold, including several oils and watercolours. Old china, of which Dr. Harke possessed a considerable amount, brought very fine prices.
