FOURTH OF JULY
AMERICA’S GREAT DAY LOCAL OBSERVANCE Today is being celebrated in the United States of America as Independence Day, the great national festival of America. This is the 153rd anniversary of the declaration of independence, and Americans the world over are joining in its celebration. In Auckland the Consul, Mr. Walter F. Boyle, has held an informal reception at the Consulate to members of the Consular Corps, representing 13 nations. This morning he received calls from the Mayor, Mr. G. Baildon, the town clerk, Mr. J. S. Brigham. the chairman of the Harbour Board. Mr. M. H. Wynyard, and the superintendent, Mr. H. B. Burnett. All offered felicitations, and Mr. Boyle returned thanks for their courtesies. Congress adopted the declaration of independence in 1776, but Great Britain did not acknowledge the break until 1782, and it was not until the following year that peace was concluded.
