INDOOR BOWLING

RINK TOURNEY FINAL BIRKENHEAD’S GOOD WIN The Auckland. Friendly Societies' Indoor Bowling Association continued its full-rink tournament on Tuesday evening last, when the section winners met to play off on the two-life system. The Methodist schoolroom. Great Xorth Road, held quite a gallery of spectators, prominent among whom were some 20 outdoor bowlers, who were attracted by the prospect of seeing some stirring contests, and they were not disappointed. The winning team. Birkenhead, gave a finished display, being a well balanced side, without a weak spot, except for a momentary lapse during the second round, when it lost its first life. On this occasion it only got going when too late, but thereafter it made few mistakes, and its skip. F. Blackwell, always had that little bit in hand and saved the situation. The runnersup deserve great credit for their fine performance. Although having quite a fair share of good luck, the genial secretary’s team of colts had the good wishes of everybody in this, its first tournament The young lads played very consistently, but in the final game the strain began to tell, and their experienced opponents’ team work was so consistent that their play did not appear as good as it really was. Their skip, George Day, carried a heavy burden in his usual cheerful manner. He is secretary of the association and bowlers will know how that job handicaps a player; but he played some very fine shots, notably in the ninth head of the final, when he rested out one of his opponents’ bowls on each hand, lyin?? six, with his opponent one bowl to go. Blackwell, however, plaved a beautiful draw into a difficult head, and got third shot, which probably clinched the game. Results: First Round.—Avondale L0.0.F.. >'• Sommerville, F. W. t’lement, A. R.
