WAIKATO SYNOD
CLERGY PENSION BILL OFFICERS ELECTED (Special to THE SUN) HAMILTON, Today. Formal business was done when the Waikato Diocesan Synod resumed its session yesterday, Bishop Cherrington presiding. A statute providing for the Waikato Diocese becoming associated with the provincial pension fund was read a second time. In the bill provision is made for the granting of pensions to clergymen who have been subscribers to the fund, and on reaching the age of 65, retired from their parishes. There was a series of motions concerning the religious instruction of children. The principal one was that Synod should appoint a committee to consider the question of religious instruction of the young apart from that given in Sunday schools. The debate was adjourned. OFFICERS ELECTED The elections' resulted: Standing Committee, clergy, Canons G. H. Gavin and E. H. Strong, the Revs. E. Lionel Harvie, Hori Raiti, C. W. Turner, R. L. Connolly, F. W. Wilkes; laymen, Messrs. T. C. Fookes. T. G. Hirst, G. W. Sexton, H. A. Warbrick, E. A. Bruce, W. F. Kent Johnson, H. G. Corbett, J. G. Wynyard, H. M. Hammond and D. Hay. There were two ballots for the lay members of Standing Committee and after nominations had been called again and a number of candidates had refused nomination Mr. Play was elected unopposed to the one vacancy remaining. There were also two ballots for the clergy and nominations were called for the one vacancy. Dean G. R. B. Barnett, Hamilton, and the Rev. W. G. H. Readon, Paeroa, being nominated. The election was postponed until today. Other officers elected were: Board of nominations. Archdeacon F. G. Evans, the Rev. R. L. Conolly and Messrs. E. M. Lysoiis and H. A. Swarbrick; auditor, Mr. R. P. Hazard; missionary committee, Canons E. S. Wayne and H. G. B. Gillespie, the Revs. G. T. Beale and C. W. Turner and Messrs. T. G. Hirst and F. M. Strange; representatives on pensions board, Dean G. R. Barnett and Mr. F. Harris. On the motion of Bishop Cherrington synod decide to forward a cablegram to the King congratulating him on his restoration to health.
Canon E. H. Strong gave notice of a motion expressing regret at the resignation of Archdeacon Cowie.
