TIMBER FOR SCHOOLS
POLICY OF DEPARTMENT PREFERENCE FOR N.Z. Further correspondence on the use of timber for the construction of school buildings was before the Auckland Education Board this morning. The Department of Education wrote stating that the special committee comprising - officers of Government departments and experts in the sawmilling industry had recently prepared grading and classification rules for New Zealand bwilding timber, and that sawmillers had undertaken to supply timber in accordance with those rules. The department further stated that it was the Government’s policy that wherever possible, New Zealand timber would be given preference in connection with the erection of buildings money for which was provided by the fetate. The department forwarded a copy of the rules, and stated that it wished that New Zealand classes and grades should be used in all future orders for supplies.
