U.S. LOANS TO FAR EAST
£200,000,000 ADVANCED IN FIFTEEN YEARS AUSTRALIAN BORROWINGS (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) WASHINGTON, Monday. The Department of Commerce announces after a study of the public finances of the Far East, that they are assuming a position of increasing importance to the American investing public. Investigation shows that from 1914 to 1928, inclusive, nearly £200,000,006 went into Far Eastern issues which were offered to the public in the United States. The total invested in these securities, excluding the Philippines, was £170,251,600, of which about three-quarters represented Government, provincial and municipal issues.
Large additional investments were made in business enterprises, philanthropic undertakings and corporate issues not offered to the public. Australian borrowings have been one of the outstanding features of America’s financial relations in recent years. Although these did not commence until the latter part of 1921 they had reached at the close of last vear a total of £49,200,000. American investments in Australia are largely confined to Commonwealth and State securities.
