ATLANTIC BLUE RIBAND
GERMAN LINER CHALLENGES MAURETANIA
BREMEN AT SOUTHAMPTON (United Service) LONDON, Monday. The North German Lloyd Company’s 46,000-ton liner Bremen is due to arrive at Southampton today. There she will receive her finishing touches in the world’s largest dry dock before entering the North Atlantic service. The Bremen will challenge the Cunard liner Mauretania for the blue riband of the Atlantic. She is a sister ship to the Europa, which was extensively damaged by fire at Hamburg in March.
Prior to the departure of the Bremen from Bremenhaven a test was carried out with her compressed air catapult for launching a seaplane, which is carried on a platform between the funnels. This seaplane will be employed in conveying mails a day in advance of the steamer’s arrival at a port. The catapult successfully launched the machine into the air and a high speed was attained in barely two seconds.
