RIFLED GAS METER
YOUTH’S OPERATIONS WITH SCREWDRIVER FINE OF £2 IMPOSED Forcing open a gas meter in an empty house by means of a screwdriver Jack Fowler recently succeeded in enriching himself to the extent of 3s. He was charged in the Police Court this morning. Fowler, aged 19, was charged with the theft of 3s, the property of the Auckland Gas Company and with committing mischief by wilfully damaging a gas meter to the extent of 10s. All*. Matthews represented accused. According to Senior-Sergeant O’Grady, Fowler was employed in Mount Albert. There was empty house adjoining the premises where he worked and the young man had obtained a key and forced open the gas meter.
Mr. Matthews was of the opinion that bad associates were responsible for accused’s actions. He had been out of work and was probably hard up. Accused came of a respectable family and his father Avas present in court. Fowler was fined £2 on the first charge and ordered to make good the damage on the second. Counsel asked for suppression of accused’s name on account of the other members of the family, but his request was refused.
