LADY GODIVA
Girl Rides in Tights Through Coventry CHEERING THOUSANDS {Australian and 2s.Z. Press Association ) (United Service) Reed. 11.5 a.m. LONDON, Sunday. Coventry celebrated the granting of its birthright by a realistic reconstruction of Lady Godiva’s ride, when Muriel Mellerup, in flesh-coloured tights and with long golden hair, rode a white horse through streets lined with cheering people. Muriel, interviewed after her Godiva ride, said: “When 1 showed the committee’s invitation to Mum and Dad. they wouldn’t hear of the ride; but I explained that the fee proposed was to be given to the hospitals. “I argued that as Lady Godiva rode naked through the town to save poor people from heavy taxes, it was little enough for me to impersonate heT. So at length Mum and Dad agreed. “It was a wonderful experience. The hardest part was to keep my eyes downcast and maintain a demure expression when thousands of people were clapping and cheering. “I wasn’t at all nervous or embarrassed at all those men staring. Why should I be? I don’t think any modern girl minds being stared at. “Even in the sunshine I felt a bit chilly, so I was glad no rain fell.’’
