STEAMER IN DISTRESS
ADRIFT OFF DANGEROUS REEF CALL FOR ASSISTANCE BRISBANE, Sunday. A Swedish steamer, the Roxen, reported late last night that she had been caught in a cyclone off the coast of Queensland. Her position was described as dangerous. The ship is en route from Brisbane to Sydney. She carries a heavy deck cargo of timber.
A Press Association telegram from WTellington last evening stated that the Acting-Secretary of the Post and Telegraph Department received the following wireless message from Sydney: “Navigation tvarning. Roxen adrift 30 miles off Danger Reef. Position very serious. Vessel liable to break down at any time. Vessels in the vicinity please keep a look-out and lend all possible assistance.”
Later messages stated that no assistance was wanted as the weather was moderating. The Roxen is a steel screw steamer of 4,528 tons. She was built in 1921 at Gothenburg, and is owned by the Rederiaktieb Transatlantic Company. Her port of registry is Gothenburg.
