FENCE ALONG FRONTIER
BARBED WIRE TO KEEP AMERICA DRY BARRIER SEVEN FEET HIGH (Australian and N.Z . Press Association) NEW YORK, Saturday, The Washington correspondent of the “New York Herald-Tribune” says the Treasury Department is considering the erection of a barbed-wire fence seven feet high along the Canadian boarder to shut out liquor runners. The Treasury’s study of the project has progressed to a point where the officials are satisfied of its pi’acticability, and it has received estimates indicating that the total cost would be £2,000,000 for a fence extending the whole length of the boundary, with interruptions where the frontier line runs into lakes and rivers. It would be the first artificial barrier ever erected between the United States and Canada. The plan springs from the determination of the “dry” forces to close the loopholes in the international rum-running blockade, which is now maintained by a force of 1000 men at a cost of £SOO,OOO a year.
