GERMANS MEET MAORIS

CIVIC AND NATIVE RECEPTION VISIT TO ROTORUA (From Our Own Correspondent) ROTORUA, Today. The officers and cadets of the German cruiser Emden, accompanied by the German Consul of New Zealand, were tendered a civic and Maori reception at the Majestic Theatre last evening, prior to the screening of the picture, “Under the Southern Cross.” The Mayor, Mr. T. Jackson, heartily welcomed the visitors to the town and country and said such a visit would tend to cement the peaceful relations between the two countries. Captain von Arnauld replied on behalf of the Emden, expressing appreciation of the cordial reception they had received in this country. He then presented to Mita Taupopaki a photograph of the cruiser Emden. Mita then replied in a forceful and characteristic speech. The visitors were then tendered a Maori reception. The party witnessed the screening of “Under the Southern Cross,” and after the pictures were met by Mr. M. H. Hampson, who escorted them to the King’s Theatre Cabaret, where a dance was held. One of the cadets won a Maori carved pipe in a dance competition with a Maori girl as a partner. This morning the party will be given a reception at Whakarewarewa. They will go to Wairoa this afternoon and on Monday to Wairakei.
