BY WHAT AUTHORITY?
RELIGION IS RATIONAL NEED FOR GOSPEL LIGHT Last evening at Kohimarama Presbyterian Church. Mr. Reuben E. Dowle took for his text John 2, 18, “What sign shewest thou unto us, seeing that thou doest these things?” In all ages mankind had demanded authority for important views of thought, and unusual actions, said the speaker. All agreed, with the exception of an arrogant few, that this was quite rational. Jesus found Himself in a position which demanded authority for His actions, and r questioners a conclusive answer. However, there were many occasions when He had to reprimand the self-righteous scribes and doctors concerning the hardness of their hearts. In modern days certain organisations were asking for authority, and, not only did they question Divine authority, but they endeavoured to stifle and subdue the good actions and beliefs of those who were striving to help suffering humanity. They even went so far as to prevent children from hearing about the unsearchable riches of Christ. The world, it is clear, could make progress only along Gospel lines. Genuine improvement could be secured only by acceptance and faithful adherence to Christ, Who gave Himself a ransom that man might be reinstated into the favour of God.
