NO FEAR OF “TALKIES”
EDGLEY AND DAWE SEARCH FOR MUSICAL SHOWS VISIT TO ENGLAND AND AMERICA The “talkies” have no fears for Eric Edgley ana Clem Dawe, formerly of the Midnight Frolics, which have been disbanded. This '’morning they arrived from Sydney by the Makura, bound for England and America in search of musical plays and people to perform in them. “We hope to bring back some good shows,” said Mr. Edgeley this morning, “and in conjunction with J. C. Williamson we expect to open in Melbourne at Christmas time. “The theatre in Australia has never been worse,” he continued. “This is due principally to strikes and the advent of the ‘talkies.’ Despite this, however, Pavlova had a really wonderful season.”
Mr. Edgley thinks that after the first novelty of the talking pictures has worn off the theatres will adjust themselves. He is not afraid of the future as far as the legitimate stage is concerned. There will be good “talkies,” just as there were good silent films, and these will get their public. The legitimate stage, after the adjustment, will come back into its own.
