RIALTO AND REGENT, EPSOM
“THE SHAKEDOWN” “The Shakedown,” starring James Murray and Barbara Kent, is now at the Rialto and Regent, Epsom, Theatres. The story concerns the career of Dave Roberts, a young boxer in the employ of a company of dishonest fight promoters. In his capacity of advance agent Dave visits a small town where he is to persuade the local residents to bet on him in a prearranged match with the professional travelling with the company. He falls in love with Marjorie, who is ignorant of his mode of . *The manner in which Dave defeats the champion and wins Marjorie’s affection is graphically told in the film. “The Case of Lena Smith,” which is also being shown, is an unusual story of Viennese life starring Esther Ralston and James Hall. SUBURBAN THEATRES At the Prince Edward Theatre this evening the bright entertainment by the Pincushion Revue Company will be repeated and two fine films screened. These are “The Silent House” (Mabel Poulton and Gibb McLaughlin), and “God’s Clay” (Anny Ondra). The Grey Lynn Cinema is showing “Kitty” (Estelle Brody and John Stuart), also “Girls Gone Wild” (Sue Carol and Nick Stuart). At the Parish Hall, Devonport, the films to be screened are “The Road to Yesterday” (a Cecil de Mille production with an all-star cast) and “Slim Fingers” (Bill Cody). At the Foresters’ Hall, Birkenhead, the pictures are “New Year’s Eve” (Mary Astor) and a “Collegians” story. There will be dancing until midnight. BAND AT ZOO TOMORROW A tuneful and interesting musical programme will be played by the Municipal Band at the Zoological Park on Sunday at 2.45 p.m. Among the items to be played are “Tancredi” overture, Beethoven’s “Creation’s Hymn,” two charming numbers from Humperdinck’s “The Miracle,” selection “Carmen” and “Reminiscences of Ireland,” cornet solo by Mr. Fred Bowes, “The Holy City,” bright marches, “Our Fighting Men,” “The Red Cross,” and “The Trossachs,” and other tuneful items. AKARANA YACHT CLUB DANCE The Akarana Yacht Club will hold its usual Saturday evening dance in the clubhouse, Mechanics’ Bay, this evening. The floor is in excellent condition, and a bright orchestra will play. A free bus will be run from Endean’s Buildings.
