EARTHQUAKE RELIEF

THEATRES DO THEIR SHARE CONCERTS AND PICTURES TOMORROW Several theatres throughout the city and suburbs are giving special entertainments tomorrow evening in aid of the Mayor’s Relief Fund for areas stricken by the earthquake. Excellent programmes have been arranged, in some cases of musical items, while several theatres are showing motion pictures. At the Majestic Theatre Mr. Whiteford Waugh’s orchestra will head a full musical programme. The items will include: —Orchestra, “Poet and Peasant” (Suppe); Lyric Quartet, “Timbuctoo,” “Grandfather’s Clock”; Reno and Arta, “Light Cavalry,” “Song Medley”; Miss Laura Walker and Miss Ida Walker, vocal duet, “The Sainted Mother” (“Maritana”) ; orchestra, “The Wedding of the Painted Doll” (Herb Brown) ; Mr. George Poore, saxophone solo, “La Golindrina”; orchestra, “Lead, Kindly . Light”; and Ernest Snell, “Freedom” (from “The White Slavo”).

At the Plaza Theatre a number of excellent films will be shown, including three talkies; Von Suppe’s “Light Cavalry” overture, played by the Vitaphone Symphony Orchestra of 50 players, Norman Heller conducting (by courtesy of the First National Pictures), “The Florentine Cathedral Choir,” Italy’s greatest ensemble, singing “Adoremus Christi” and the Toreador’s Song from “Carmen,” Sandro Benelli director (by courtesy of First National Pictures), and “The Song of the Volga Boatmen,” male choir (courtesy of First National Pictures). The Everybody’s Theatre will screen “The Romance of Hinemoa,” the interesting Maori picture (by courtesy of Cinema Art Films), and specially selected supports.

The Royal Theatre, Ivingsland, will screen “The Last Days of Pompeii” (by courtesy of Paramount Pictures), also vocal and instrumental items. At the Prince Edward Theatre, Karanaghape Road, an enjoyable concert has been arranged. The programme will be as follows:

Prince Edward Orchestra (conductress, Eve Bentley), “Pique Dame” (Suppe); song, selected, Mr. Len Barnes; song, “You in a Gondola,” Miss Mary Cofield; violin solq, “Hejere Kati” (Hubay), Miss Ina Bosworth; recital, Mr. Alan McElwain; selection, “Chu Chin Chow,” orchestra; sacred solo, Agnus Dei” . (Bizet), Madame Mary Towsey; song, “Danny Boy,” Miss Vera Stacpoole; song, selected, Mr. Len Barnes; and Grand March, Prince Edward Orchestra. Accompanist, Mr. Cyril Towsey. At Remuera, the Moulin Rouge (late Tudor Cinema), will present a concert with orchestral and vocal numbers.
