Launch Wrecked at Rakino Island
DRIVEN ON REEF CREW OF THREE ESCAPE Driven ashore by the force of the gale raging in the Hauraki Gulf, the 38ft. fishing launch Alma was piled up on the reef at Rakino Island, at S o’clock last Wednesday morning. Her crew of three is safe. The launch, which is hired by Mr. J. Lucas, carried three natives as crew, and was on a fishing expedition in the Gulf. It is stated that the engine failed, leaving the small craft at the mercy of the waves. The crew pulled ashore in a dinghy, and crossed Rakino Island to the residence of Mr. Gilbert Sanford, where they were provided with food and dry clothing. Mr. Sanford took his own launch round to the scene of the wreck, and towed the Alma back to the main bay alongside his homestead. Her seams have been started by the continual beating on the reef, and she is now lying under water at high tide. The extent of the damage is not known. The crew was brought back front Rakino Island by the Olive Rose at 1.30 p.m. yesterday.
