THE AMATEURS

The Manukau Amateur Cycling Clubj held its two races last week under . fine but windy conditions. The first race, that of the juniors, attracted 11 starters, while the senior race drew a field of 37. C. Hansen created a mild surprise by defeating both Yule and Hall, the scratch pair, for time honours by 6sec. Hansen is a very strong rider for a junior. More subcess should come his way. L. Cogan and S. Sargent, two limit riders, filled first and second places respectively. The latter was making his first appearance. E. Andrews was selected by the enthusiasts as the most likely winner. He rode with good judgment. He sprinted early over the final dash to get the verdict by length. One of the co-markers of the above, J. Leather, was in second berth. A keen member, he. is always to the fore in club runs. R. Watson, by getting third, now takes the lead for the Kohn Cup. This competition is creating a good deal of interest. The result should be very close at the end of the season. * * * Hen Dwight had a little in reserve when he defeated his co-marker for time. Dwight and Whitten early dropped F. Casey, who was pushing an 82in. instead of his usual 88in. gear. During the race one of the competitors, R. V. Stockwell, hit A. Reed’s back wheel. The result was that Stockwell crashed heavily, bringing down Mackerill. Both these riders received severe gravel-rashes. Neither machine was damaged to any extent. The “hoodoo” still follows H. Russell. Recently at a club run he hit H. Dwight’s wheel. When he was examined, it was found that he had broken his collar-bone. Members wish him a speedy recovery. * * * W. Clarke and T. Farrelly are two limit riders who so far have not met with much success. The best of club members, they deserve a better fate. ♦ * * Members were glad to see L. Develin about again. Although still on crutches as the result of an accident he had in Queen Street some time ago, he hopes to be able to cdmpete in the races held by the club later in the season.'

A notable absentee last week was Jack Wade. Owing to unforeseen circumstances, he was unable to be present. The rest should do him no harm. * * * Last evening the club held its dance. It proved to be a great success and members are looking forward already to tho next. * * * The events next week will be a five and a-half mile junior and a 34-mile senior. The club run during the weekend will be to Howick, leaving Newmarket at 2 p.m. SATURDAY’S RACES LIST OF HANDICAPS The following cycling handicaps have been declared for Saturday’s races at Mangere: Auckland Club's 13.8-mile Race.—S.
