“A DEATH TRAP”
ARGYLE STREET CROSSING ERECTION OF SIGNALS “It is a death trap. We have put up with antiquated devices long enough and we should insist that the department put something up to stop accidents.*’ Thus said Mr. .H. L. Kayes, when a letter from the Hon. A. J. Stallworthy, Minister of Health, writing for the Minister of Railways, regarding the Argyle Street crossing, came before the Mount Albert Borough Council at a meeting last evening. Replying to a letter from the council asking for the installation of gates or booms at this crossing, the Minister said that the department had not yet completed its inquiries regarding these devices. Arrangements were being made to replace the flashing light signal with another device, and it would not be advisable to hold up the question in anticipation of a decision to import a set of gates or booms for trial purposes. Therefore circumstances precluded his meeting the council’s request. “I move that we write again,” said Mr. Kayes. “There have been eight or nine accidents, and, I think, two deaths.” . In seconding the motion, Mr. J. IT. Langley said: “The department is playing ducks and drakes with us. We want to take a firm stand and demand that proper devices be erected.” It was decided that the Minister be again communicated with.
