NO DRIVER’S LICENCE
INSTRUCTED BY POLICE TO MOVE TRUCK MOTORIST’S EXCUSE The unusual excuse that he had , been told by a constable to drive j away a lorry, the driver of which had been arrested, was proffered by Andrew James Watson, who was charged at the Police Court this morning with failing to produce a motor-driver’s licence. A CCORDING to Watson, his friend had been arrested while in charge of a motor-lorry in Remuera Road. ‘‘l was with him and the constable who made the arrest told me to drive the lorry away,” urged defendant. Sub-Inspector McCarthy expressed doubts as to tbe genuineness of the story. ‘‘Watson never made this excuse to any of the constables who interviewed him,” he said. He %vas reported as driving along Hobson Street without a tail-light, and when further inquiries were made it was found that he had no licence.” Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M.: All this story is an invention, then. Perhaps he is thinking of some other occasion. Defendant still urged the truth of his story, however, and a remand was made until tomorrow to allow the police to make inquiries. Watson, aged 20, also made a second appearance on a charge of stealing a bav mare valued at £l7 and belonging to Thomas Lock at Mangere on April 5 Further counts against him were that on June 15 at Auckland with intent to defraud he obtained motor registration plates valued at 2s 6d by representing that he had the authority to do so, and that on February 18, also at Auckland, he obtained credU by fraud by incurring a debt of £4 17s 6d with Schofield and Co., of Newmarket. On these charges he was remanded until tomorrow. Bail was allowed in one surety of £SO and two each of £SO. Mr. J. J. Sullivan appeared for accused.
