REPORT NOT BELIEVED

MISSING SHIP KOBENHAVN OFF ISLAND TRISTAN DA CUNHA STORY (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) Reed. 11 a.m. COPENHAGEN, Mon. The East Asiatic Company, owner of the missing ship Kobenhavn, considers to be unreliable the observations of the captain of the steamer Halesius, who reported the wreck of the Kobenhavn off Tristan Da Cunha. The captain of the Halesius reported having picked up a report from the island stating that a four or fivemasted vessel was sighted from there. She was evidently In distress west of the island.

The vessel had only a small jib set. It was feared she would strike a. reef, but as no wreckage was found it was believed the vessel cleared the island. Owing to the rough seas the islanders could not launch a boat and therefore did not identify the vessel. The Kobenhavn left Buenos Ayres on December 14 for Adelaide. The vessel was manned by a Danish crew and had a large number of naval cadets on hoard. She was in wireless touch with the Danish steamer Arizona on December 17 and with the Norwegian steamer William Plumer on December 21, but no later reports were received.
