OTAGO FARMERS VISIT WHANGAREI TRIP MADE TO RUSSELL (From Our Oxen Correspoxident) WHANGAREI, Today. The party of Southern farmers arrived by special train on Saturday from Auckland, and was met at the station and conveyed to their quarters by cars. In the evening they were entertained at a smoke concert in the Winter Show buildings. Mr. W. Jones, the Mayor, extended a hearty welcome on behalf of the farmers of the district. He said he was the first Mayor of Whangarei to have the opportunity to address a band of Southern farmers. He knew that controversies often arose over North and South Island politics, but now there was the chance for farmers of the South and North to mingle, many difficulties would be overcome. He hoped they w r ould stay longer on their next visit. Mr. H. W. Crawford gave a short talk on the North, dealing with the land, climate and industries, and made particular reference to the kauri tree, surprising many Southerners when he said that three large houses could be built out of one particular tree in North Auckland. Mr. L. Webb, chairman of the County Council, Mr. McKay, a member of the County Council, and Colonel McCarrol also spoke. Several visitors replied and thanked the speakers for information given, and the welcome received, and wished the Northern farmers would pay a visit to the South in the near future and sample Southern hospitality. Yesterday a train conveyed the majority of the party to Opua, and thence to Russell. They viewed Russell church and returned to Whangarei at 5.30 p.m., and departed today on the return trip to Auckland. RETURN THIS AFTERNOON TOUR OF CITY ARRANGED The party of Southern farmers will arrive in Auckland from Whangarei this afternoon by special train. Tomorrow the visitors will be taken for char-a-banc trips to various places in the city and suburbs. On Wednesday the party will leave for Rotorua at 8.20 a.m., and will return to Wellington, en route for the South Island, on Friday morning.
