JOWITT RESIGNS SEAT

TO RECONTEST PRESTON AS LABOUR MAN LIBERAL RESENTMENT (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) (United Service) Reed. 9.15 a.m. LONDON, Friday. The Attorney-General, Sir William A. Jowitt, K.C., is resigning the Preston seat, which he won as a Liberal. He desires to recontest the seat in the Labour interests. His decision follows strong manifestations of Liberal resentment at his defection. A British Official Wireless message says that Cabinet held a prolonged meeting today. Members sat for two hours in the morning and reassembled after luncheon. It is understood that much of the time was occupied in considering the preliminary draft of the King’s Speech for the opening of Parliament on July 2. The speech will indicate the Government policy on current questions, and the legislation projected in the forthcoming session; but its final draft is not expected to he completed before the end of next week. Parliament will rise at the end of July for the summer recess, in accordance with custom, but it is anticipated that the holiday will be shorter than usual and that the House will reassemble in October instead of November, in order to make progress with the exceptionally large programme of work with which it is likely to be faced.
