NORTH HIGHWAY BLOCK

WAIWERA BRIDGE APPROACH FILLING A QUAGMIRE In response to numerous complaints concerning the condition of a filling at *the approach to the Waiwera Bridge on the highway between Waiwera and Puhoi, Mr. R. E. Champtaloup, touring manager of the Auckland Automobile Association, yesterday carried out an inspection. Mr. Champtaloup reports that the majority of drivers cannot get north of Puhoi. The route is obstructed by the partly-completed filling and there are no evidences of efforts for relief, which was regrettable because of the effort which had been made to provide an all-weather surface between Auckland and Waiwera. The blockage was the only obstacle to access of Puhoi The approach had been converted by rain into a quagmire, and although service cars were going through many cars with small clearances could npt pass. Mr. Champtaloup -said * that drivers unaccustomed to clay conditions would require chains on the Wajwera Hill today. More intensive maintenance work was required. The surface dried quickly, and if gravel were spread lightly it wrould remove any terrors. The Auckland Automobile Association is making representations to the Main Highways Board. The route direct from Devonport to Waiwera through Red Vale and Silverdale is impassable, the all-weather access being by the main highway through Albany.
