STOLE WOMAN'S PURSE ROBBERY AT HAMILTON (From Our Own Correspondent) HAMILTON, Today. “Cave man” love-making- resulted in the appearance of Perclval Charles Yates, aged 25, a married man, of Massey Street, Frankton, in the Hamilton Magistrate’s Court today, before Mr. S. L. Patterson, S.M. He pleaded guilty to robbing May Palmer of £1 13s od, and of using personal violence against her. lie was further charged with stealing coal from the Railway Department at Frankton. May Palmer, widow, of the Central Dining Rooms, Hamilton, testified that on Saturday, June 8. a man approached her in Victoria Street and, as a result of a conversation, they became friendly. She now knew the man to be accused. On the following Sunday she and accused went for a walk to the lake, and they met again the next Wednesday night at the same place, proceeding to the bathing sheds. She and accused became intimate. Subsequently lie asked her for 2s to go to Frankton. She refused. She had 30s in a purse, which she kept in her blouse. When leaving the reserve accused struck her in the face with' a torch, and she nearly fell down. | She said, "Don’t be silly. What did i you do that for. I suppose it’s over the two bob.” Accused replied that that was so, an£ that he wanted the money at once. Accused snatched the purse out of her hand, struck her on the jaw and ran away. Following the occurrence witness got up and returned home, later complaining to the police. Ethel Prentice, proprietress of the Central Dining Rooms, said that the previous witness had been boarding | with her since the beginning of June. ! On the night in question Mrs. Palmer • returned home between 9 and 9.30. Her face was swollen and her mouth bleeding. Tier coat was covered with mud. Detective White added that her marriage. birth and pensions certificates, which were stolen with the purse, had been discarded by accused, but had been recovered in a mutilated condition.
