STREET LIGHTING

NEWMARKET WANTS COST REDUCTION OBJECTION TO HOARDINGS The Newmarket Borough Council, at a meeting last evening, decided to approach the Auckland Electric-Power Board to obtain a reduction in street lighting charges, power now being available from Arapuni. In addition, the council instructed its delegates to the Local Bodies’ Association to seek the association’s co-operation on the question. A circular letter from the Commissioner of Transport was received concerning traffic signs, and the question of pooling the requirements of all local bodies in New Zealand, and obtaining standardised signs. It was decided that in view of the position of the King Street level crossing, where the department had recently erected a compulsory stop sign, the question of erecting St. Andrew’s Cross signs, in accordance with the regulations, should be taken up with the authorities, with the object of obtaining exemption from the provisions of the regulations in this particular case. It was decided to ask the Government to remove hoardings on the rail* way bridge. The Auckland Drainange Board advised that the council’s contribution for the year ending March 31, 1930, was =£937, an amount, stated the clerk, which was £25 less than last year. Tho hospital auxiliary' was granted permission to hold a street collection in the borough on Friday. June 2S.
