MATAMATA INTERESTS
The annual meeting of ilie Matamata Chamber of Commerce was presided over by Mr. B. C. Taylor. He welcomed the visitors, Messrs. J. Buchanan and J. Mclntyre, town board, W. S. Wilson, Matamata County Council, and H. Rollett, Farmers’ Union.
Mr. Taylor said that during the year the chamber had discussed the halfholiday question, which had caused a certain amount of local heartburning, and the universal half-holiday was the only solution of the difficulty. The applications for a late fee letter-box and direct telephone connection with Tauranga had been refused. The report and balance sheet, which showed a credit balance of £. 9 13s Id, was adopted. Officers elected were: President, Mr. B. C. Taylor: vice-presidents, Messrs. B. B. Bell and R. W. Stevens; secretary, Mr. H. E. Schofield: treasurer. Mr. G. G. Griffiths; auditor. Mr. T. J. Underwood; members of council, Messrs. H. Keely, A. W. Barkman, L. Flower, W. Halligan and A. C. Wrigley.
Following- the reading of an article by Mr. J. R. O. Loehhead, Pu+ ,uru, on rating on unimproved values, it was decided to invite Messrs. J. Thomas and A. Dibble, of Auckland, to give an address in Matamata, so as to give the ratepayers a chance to express their opinion. It was decided to obtain the necessary signatures to a requisition for a poll to be taken. The meeting expressed itself strongly in favour of the establishment of a licensed house in Matamata, and it was decided to urge on the Government the desirability of redistributing licences on a population basis.
