GIFT PICTURES

ART GALLERY ADDITIONS FROM TRENWITH COLLECTION Nine pictures have been selected by Mr. John Barr, city librarian, under the terms of the will of the late Mr. Martin Trenwith, and have been hung in the Auckland Art Gallery. Mr. Trenwith was an enthusiastic collector and in his private gallery of about 100 pictures he had many that were purchased at Auckland exhibitions, at which he was a frequent exhibitor. In the nine pictures selected the work of New Zealand artists predominates. A scene at an English country horse fair is the only one definitelynamed, and it is entitled “The Critics.” It is by W. Hounson Byles, a New Zealand painter. Other New Zealand artists represented are John Gully-, with two New Zealand landscapes, and there is also a large water colour of a swamp scene with wild ducks flying overhead, by W. Menzies Gibb. C. F. Goldie is represented by a study of a Maori man. English artists represented are Fred Roe, with an oil painting, a landscape water colour by the well-known artist, Copely Fielding, an historical picture in water colour by T. Cattermole, and a landscape with trees by Lee Hankey.
