THE CASH RIDERS Only nine riders participated in the sealed handicap and time trial staged by the Auckland Cycle Club at Mangere last Saturday. Riders drew for positions, Hayes, the dual winner, drawing a good marble. The following review of the event gives the riders as they started out.
Another third was credited to G. Hall in the handicap. He was rather fortunate in being caught by two- other riders. He gained his time in the last lap with them. His consistency should soon be rewarded.
Freeman was next away, but lie did not establish himself as an uiipaced rider. A good club member, he has been a regular starter in the races conducted this season.
A rider who was expected to perform better was F. Potter, who ultimately was placed fourth in the time trial. He had some good riders in front of him. His performance must have been very disappointing to him, as he has had some good unpaced rides this season
J. Lind op, who was on the scratch mark in the handicap, in which he finished fourth, was second in the time trial
A surprise was registered by J. Jacob, who finished second in the handicap. He is a fast-improving rider
Conditions last week suited Dave Storey. He finished third in the time trial. It was predicted by many that Storey would be one of the first three. The honours of the day were certainly with Slater Hayes. At present in great form. Slater captured the handicap and time honours. This is the second occasion this season he has won the double. His week’s spell seems to have done him a jot of good.
Last to bo dispatched was K. Mathieson. lie found the others too hot for him over the initial lap. He wisely withdrew. Ken is not noted for being an unpaced performer.
During the week the protest lodged by F. Potter against S. Hayes for receiving pace from J. Lindop in the Papakura race was considered by the Protest Committee, which came to the folowing decision: “That, in view of all the competitors receiving some assistance regarding pace from J. Lindop, this committee decides not to disturb the judge’s placings, and to recommend the Rules Committee to set up a rule covering outside pacing.” How the committee could come to such a decision is hard to understand. It is clearly stipulated in all roadracing rules that outside pacing is not tolerated. The action of the committee in recommending that the above rule should be placed in the rule book is superfluous. Next week the race will be for Ihe championship of the club. The club this year is not well off in regard to members numerically, but, nevertheless, a quality field will be on hand. Tliis event is noted for bringing in surprise results. This year should be no exception. On form, Slater Hayes looks to have a mortgage on the race, but riders equally as god as he is have been downed before. He should receive strong opposition from K. Mathieson. who has been riding very consistently this season. Other riders to participate will be H. Pelham, J. Lindop (who won this event last year), D. Storey, F. Potter, J. Jacob and G. Hall. A good race should eventuate.
Rather inclement weather greeted tho club’s initial dance last Wednesday. Despite this fact, there was a good attendance. A most enjoyable evening was spent. Another c’ance will be held shortly.
Tho cup, which was on view last week, is for the Clevedon race. It is a very fine piece of work. The member who wins the race will be very fortunate, as the cup is to be Avon outright.
THE AMATEURS The usual races—one for the seniors and one for the juniors—were held last week-end by the Manukau Amateur Cycling Club. Both races were won alter spirited finishes. Quite a number of competitors in the senior event did not complete the distance, owing, no doubt, to the very solid going. The junior flutter was characterised by a battle royal between the two scratch men for time honours. C. T. Yule (scr.), again demonstrated his superiority over E. Hall. The two juniors settled down to serious business over the last furlong. The former gained the verdict by a wheel. Pie is at present in great form. L. Oxton (2m 10s), registered his initial win in road cycling this season by defeating PI. V. Gordon, his comarker. Gordon had the misfortune to lose his pedal near the finish. IPad this accident not occurred, the result would have been closer.
First and fastest time went to J. Wade. PI is AA'in irt a road race Avas overdue. The congratulations bestowed upon him by his club mates go to show the popularity and merit of his performance. When he let himsef go in the final sprint he gave the others no chance whatever, winning by tAvo lengths.
IP. R. Dwight, co-marker of Wade, filled second berth. It Avas very fitting that both scratch men should fill the main placings, which is another example of the results of good pacing.
Pushing an SSin. gear, Frank Casey filled third place. Evidently the high gear partly contributed to his being so near at the finish. On the day he was beaten by two fitter riders. IPe is always, however, very hard to dispose of.
L. Aldred has taken the advice given in these notes concerning the pushing of high gears. Although he is the smallest back-marker, he invariably performs well. He rode some good laps last week, being rather unfortunate in having three real good performers in front of him at the finish.
J. C. Stewart made a determined effort about 400 yards from the finish. When he jumped he swerved across the road, interfering with some of the riders. OtherAA'ise he rode a faultless rac.e.
Through being interfered with by Stewart, Con Gainsborough lost any chance he had of being in the final three. lie put in a strong challenge at the finish. Had he had a better position earlier he Avould most likely have been placed. Pie finished fifth.
A feature of last Saturday’s racing was the fact that the first four riders over the line filled the four time honours. It was also noted that a lot of rough riding was taking place in the big bunches. Roberts was the chief sufferer last Aveek. He Avas run off the road. His effort to catch the field again was in vain.
A very disappointing muster —that Avas how club captain Casey described his outing last week to Pukekohe. If more members do not roll up to the club jaunt next Sunday no more will be held. The destination will be HelensA'ille, leaving the Ponsonby Reservoir. at 9 a.m. sharp. Now, what about it, boys? Don’t you think your officials deserve more encouragement than this? The club dance xvill be held next Wednesday at St. Sepulchre’s Hall, Tickets are procurable from members of the social committee. It rests on the members thefrisel\ T es to make this function a success.
