WAIKATO TOPICS

MANY HORSES TO APPEAR AT TRENTHAM JUMPING RECRUITS (Special to THE SUN) HAMILTON, Wednesday. It has been very quiet in racing circles in South Auckland during the last fortnight (writes The Sun’s travelling turf correspondent), and with the exception of the contingent likely to make the trip to Wellington for the Trentham meeting, there is not likely to be any great deal of activity on the tracks for some little time. , Paganelli figures among the nominations for the Epsom Handicap and other important events at Randwick in the spring, and it is probable that both Paganelli and Tasty will be raced at the Warwick Farm meeting in August, just preceding the big carnival at Randwick. Tasty, who accompanies Paganelli, is not very well known to racegoers, for the two-year-old has had practically no racing. Pie is a most promising young galloper, however, and is not going over merely as a companion for Paganelli. , The Te Awumutu champion, Aussie, is also booked definitely for a visit to his native country next month. It is not intended now to race him in the King’s Cup at Brisbane in August, but to reserve him fo.r the spring racing in Sydney. George Paul, the ownertrainer of the Fortafix gelding, was keen on A. Tinker going across to ride his champion, but the Te Rapa trainer has too many horses now under his care to even consider the matter and an effort is to be made to secure the services of L. G. Morris, who piloted Aussie to victory in the Storey Memorial Cup. v Trip Off Tho projected visit to Australia for the Victorian Grand National meeting with Wedding March and Roman Abbey is not likely to eventuate. Wedding March has gone lame and owner-trainer R. Hannon considers the trip scarcely worth while with only the one horse. Roman Abbey has accordingly been nominated for the Wellington meeting, where he should prove a great proposition to follow. It. Hannon has another very likely candidate in King’s Guard to represent him in the big jumping events at the Trentham gathering, while Tinokoa is to carry the cream jacket and red cap in the leading flat events. A veritable mud-lark, Tinokoa is one quite capable of springing a surprise if the track happens to be very holding, conditions which will in ail probability prevail. An Unlucky One Mangani was a little unlucky at the Great Northern meeting and many Waikato followers of the game ar getting in early on him for the big jumping events at next month’s Wellington meeting. The Gordonton-trained jumper is in great fettle and should run big races in both the Steeplechase and the Hurdles at Trentham. Veterinary advice indicates that it is doubtful whether Pendavies will stand another preparation. Wiltshire has suffered no great ill-effects from his unsuccessful outings at the Great Northern meeting. and promises to strip in good order for his engagements at Trentham, and later on at Riccarton.

Th© King Lupin gelding, Wliaka King, who sihce the Great Northern meeting has been an inmate of W. J. McLean's stables at Cambridge, is to be put to hurdle racing. The chestnut, who has shown himself possessed of plenty of pace on the flat, has displayed no small amount of promise in the schooling tasks that have so far been allotted him.

His connections have evidently despaired of winning a flat race with the disappointing customer, Te Koroke, for he was noticed out following the Hunt last week. Although he made one mistake, he displayed some promise as a jumper, and with more experience may prove a useful candidate in this department of the game. Master Rolev, who has placed performances over hurdles to his credit during the season, is another jumper that has been qualifying with the Waikato Hunt. The Cynic gelding is proving himself a good, fast jumper and will be a very dangerous candidate in forthcoming Hunt events.
