FOUR NATIVES KILLED

FIGHT WITH WHITES IN DURBAN STREET HUNDRED ARRESTS (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) Reed. 12.15 p.m. CAPETOWN, Tues. Four natives were killed, 40 were injured, and 100 were arrested in the Durban disturbance. When an old saddler was battered to death, the whites retaliated with revolvers. An earlier message said the natives objected to the preparation of food by others than their own compatriots. All traffic to Berea was suspended, and vast crowds watched the contest. Europeans complicated matters by attacking the headquarters of the native I.C. Union, a Labour association. 9 The neighbourhoods in which the Europeans were isolated were attacked by natives, and one of them was killed. This enraged the crowd, w*ho broke through the police cordon, and shots were fired on both sides, but the only injuries inflicted were caused by flying brickbats.
