GIANT AIR BEACON
FOR NEW CIVIC THEATRE VALUE TO FLYERS It is proposed by Mr. Thomas A. O’Brien to place at the top of the tower of the new Civic Theatre a giant air-beacon similar to those in use at the Croydon airdrome in England, which guides the huge Paris-London air liners to safety. The illumination is provided by 5,000-watt lamps consuming a large volume of power, which, when focused through special lenses, will throw a beam of light that is visible for over 10 miles; the rays of light going fanwise in an upward direction, obviating any glare that would interfere with traffic or* cause annoyance to pedestrians. Captain Buckley, of the Auckland airdrome, is of the opinion that this night beacon would be of the utmost value for night flying. Aviators would at once he able to establish their position with such a prominent and arresting landmark. Before finally proceeding with the project it will be necessary to secure special authority from the Marine Department and the Auckland ElectricPower “Board. No difficulty is anticipated in this respect.
