CAUGHT IN FLAMES
FATAL LORRY ACCIDENT IN MT. EDEN INQUEST ON TWO VICTIMS Death from burns and shock, the , result of the motor-truck in which they i were riding bursting into flames after | accidentally striking a telegraph post in Mount Eden Road, was the verdict i returned by Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., i coroner, at an inquest held yesterday j concerning the two victims of the accident. The two men were the driver of the v ehicle, Mr. Frederick Richard Wilkin, i and Mr. George Durham Biddick, who died in the Auckland Hospital at i an early hour on the morning of May : 22, the day following the accident. I Mr. Leary appeared for Winstone, I Ltd., owners of the vehicle, and Mr. Sullivan for the relatives of Mr. Wilkin. Evidence of eye-wdtnesses showed that the truck had been running beside a tram and had struck a van drawn up on the side of the road. It then ran for about 30ft with two wheels on the footpath before striking the post. Witnesses disagreed as to whether the lorry had struck the tram or not. In the opinion of R. J. Laird, insurance adjuster and motor expert, the lire had been caused by the bursting of the tank under the seat and the contact of petrol and petrol vapour with 1 the broken exhaust silencer which was I just beneath
