EVADED OBLIGATION
NEGRO COOK AND WHITE WIFE MAINTENANCE ORDERED Robert Harris, a negro sea cook, used every artifice of familiarity. oratory and blandishment with Mr. F. IT. Levien, S.M.. at the Onehunga Police Court yesterday afternoon in an attempt to escape the maintenance of his white wife. On his last appearance a few weeks ago Harris pleaded poverty, saying that he had suffered an injury to his leg and could not work, but it appears that he has been receiving £2 10s a week as insurance under the Employers’ Liability Act. He admitted being in arrears with his payments, but urged that lie had been paying off his debts to people who had given him board and lodging. “Is your leg still standing to you?” asked Mr. Levien. Harris: Yes, but the hospital doctor says it will be all right in three weeks. Harris was sentenced to one month’s hard labour, the warrant to be suspended as long as he pays 15s a week and 2s 6d » week off the arrears.
