WAIKATO SUPERIOR TO AUSTRALIA TAKAPUNA MAYOR’S VISIT "As far as I could see, Waikato farmers could show Australian farmers something about the care and cultivation of land,” said Mr. J. W. Williamson, Mayor of Takapuna, who returned from Sydney by the Marama this morning. Mr. Williamson, who was accompanied by his wife, has been on a six weeks' holiday visit to Australia. They visited Sj'dney, Melbourne, Geelong and the Blue Mountains during their trip. •‘The farms we could see alongside the railway did not seem too fertile,” he said. “There were lots of stumps and boughs lying about. The sheep seemed very dirty. We were surprised at the difference in the appearance of the country when compared with the Waikato.” While in Australia Mr. Williamson made a study of the working of suburban councils in connection with local municipal activities. “We didn’t suffer many ill-effects from the strike,” he continued. “The only thing that troubled us was the shortage of gas, but this was not very pronounced and was soon rectified.”
