PLAZA
“THE SINGING FOOL" Excellent talking- and sound effects have been obtained in “The Singing Fool," the interesting film which is now drawing to the end of its long Auckland season at the Plaza Theatre. The leading role is played by AI. Jolson, one of the most popular vaudeville entertainers in America, and the supporting cast includes many other well-known actors. The story concerns a young vaudeville player, who marries a beautiful fellow-artist, but after a few months of happiness finds her unfaithful. He loses all ambition, but redeems himself for the sake of his only child. At the height of his fame the child dies, and the concluding scene shows the effects of this final blow on the artist. The supporting programme includes shorter talking pictures, in which items are given by Martinelli, the famous tenor, Mischa Elman, the violinist, and other artists. SUBURBAN THEATRES The Prince Edward Theatre will show this evening “Street Angel” (Janet Gaynor and Charles Farrell), also “New Year’s Eve" (Mary Astor). At the Grey Lynn Cinema the pictures are to be “The Road to Yesterday" (Cecil de Mille production with all-star cast) and “Remembrance." TALKIES MADE OUT OF DOORS The great technical strides made by Warner Bros, with Vitaplione will be seen further in Monte Blue’s forthcoming starring picture, “From Headquarters," in which many of the Vitaphone sequences have 1 fen filmed out of doors with perfect force and clarity that was previously obtainable only on the sound-proof stages of the studio. Scenes of this kind were first attempted in “Conquest." another starring picture for Monte Blue, which was completed some weeks ago. This work, however, has been carried much further in “From Headquarters,” and the res Lilts are said to be amazing.
