SCENES AT EPSOM

Late Turf —

GOOD TRIALS WITNESSED TODAY GOLD JACKET’S EFFORT Alexandra Park presented an animated scene this morning when trainers took advantage of the fine weather and dry track to step their charges out briskly in view of engagements at the Auckland Trotting Club’s fixtu re which opens on Saturday. There was a large number of inter- 1 ested spectators present, and they were j well repaid for their trouble, some good displays of trotting and pacing being witnessed. One of the best efforts was that of Gold Jacket, who in company with Jewel Pointer traversed ten furlongs in line style, coming’ home the last half mile in good time. H. Kinnimont was first out and stepped Napland over two miles, the trotter going at a solid clip throughout and never putting a foot wrong. Western Voyage (W. Tomkinson) and Cannonball (V. Albom) were associated in a bout over a similar distance, both giving a good display. Cannonball showed a fine turn of speed, while Western Voyage proved an adept in the art of quickly returning to the correct gait after twice leaving his feet. Vendome Pleases White Sun (W. Tomkinson), Vendome (J. Kennerley), Ethiopian (C. Dunleary), hopped out for a mile and a-half task, and with two furlongs gone, Vesuvius (V. Albom) joined issue. White Sun was the pilot, and when half a mile was traversed, Ethiopian tangled badly and was pulled up. Vendome was with White Sun two furlongs from home, where Vesuvius moved up, and White Sun tiring in the straight, Kennerley and Albom finished on terms. It transpired that portion of Ethiopian's gear came adrift, and the Hastings winner was then sent a couple of circuits on his own by trainer Tomkinson, the Wildwood Junior gelding moving attractively. Rose Bingen (A. Julian) trotted over several circuits in fine style, infusing plenty of dash into her task. J. McKendrick did not ask DPlon Huon to put up anything in the way of fast time over eight furlongs, but the chestnut paced boldly throughout the journey. Linkman Goes Nicely Linkman (V. Albom) and Young Blake (W. Tomkinson) commenced at the two-mile peg, the trotter halving the advantage to the twelve-furlong disc, where Hohora joined in. Going down the back the latter bobbled, and Linkman went up to Young Blake, and the pair set over the final half mile together, Hohoro being handy. The Southern pair finished very strongly, and there was nothing between them at the finish.

Two miles was the allotment for The Abbey (W. Clifton) and Goldman (S. Roe), the latter acting as pacemaker for the opening mile. Then The Abbey moved up and both sons of Gold Bell pegged away solidly in company, till the final lane, where The Abbey went on to finish in front of his associate. It was a good work-out for both pacers. Explosion (A. Julian) and Great Ballin tJ. Cockle) stepped over a mile and a-half. the chestnut having the better of the argument in the run to the post. Old Rockaway, looking a _ picture, was given strong work by W. Nightingale, over several circuits with a decidedly good brush over the concluding half-mile, .which was left behind in rare style. Master Councillor Surprises Dalmeny (C. Dunleavy) and Mawliariti (W. Tomkinson) left the two-mile peg together, the former leading for half a mile, where W. Evans chipped in with Master Councillor. The latter carried on the running till three furlongs from home, where Dalmeny ranged alongside, with Mawhariti moving up fast. The latter had liis rival a furlong from home but skipped and Master Councillor pleased immensely by hanging on to finish with Dalmeny. Wall (R. Fisken), Etta Cole (F. Gilchrist) and Sebisca (S. Mitchell) elected to go two miles, but with a few furlongs covered the latter broke badly and was soon well in the rear. Wall struck gamely to Etta Cole till the straight was reached the last time, where lie left his feet, but making a good recovery, was handy at the wire. Horizon (S. Roe) went from the two-mil© peg, Dad’s Hope (W. Clifton) picking him up at the 12-furlong disc. They kept well together till the final furlong, where Horizon tired and Dad’s Hope finished in the van. A Good Sprint Jewel Pointer (A. Julian) and Gold Jacket (L. McMahon) stepped off together from the mile and a-quarter post, the former having the advantage for six furlongs. Here Gold Jacket put in a run, and lie was beside his companion till the home turn, where he asserted his superiority to finish in front. The Auckland Cup winner greatly pleased those assembled by his fine effort. Several candidates, including Evelyn Locanda (A. Bryce), Mountain Dell (IT. Mitchell), Polly’s Picture (S. Mitchell) and Glandore (B. Dyer) were given sound work without the straps. U. Garnett arrived from Ashhurst this morning with Great Delight, and W. Fay came through from Feilding with Native Star. A. Uendricksen (Cardinal Logan and Trampfast) and D. Withers (Steel All) are due tomorrow morning from Christchurch. WORK AT OTAHUHU The Epsom trainer J. Shaw again visited Otahuhu today and gave his team another run on the grass. A heavy fog enveloped the course, ! and while the circuit was in very tair order, no attempt was made to put up time. Tony Victor (unhoppled) and Floraline were associated m a brush over a couple of circuits. both shaping nicely. The trotter’s display was again pleasing. Peterson and Gold Sovereign were worked in unison, both executing a useful task. Peterson kept to the correct gait much better than in his previous attempts. A. Foursome

All Bell, Stanmoor, Rockburn and Trustworthy hopped off at the mile and a-half peg, but the pace was mediocre for the first half of the journev. Then the speed was increased, with a good brush home, in which Trustworthy showed up best. Torpedo Huon, Warplane and Native Prince were associated in a strong work-out over ten furlongs, the two coming home smartly together. Stonev paced nicely in company with Carmel ~ over a mile and a-quarter, while Warspite and Arachue were given sound work over a similar distance.
