MOTORISTS’ AFFAIRS

AUTOMOBILE ASSOCIATION AUCKLAND COUNCIL MEETING Questions of interest to motorists were discussed at last evening’s meeting of the council of the Auckland Automobile Association, over which Mr. A. Grayson presided. The Minister of Public Works, the Hon. E. A. Ransom, notified that the association’s representations regarding the Papakura-Otahuhu stock route would bo carefully considered. The chairman of the Main Highways Board. Mr. F. W. Furkett, advised that the recommendation of the Franklin County Council with regard to the proposed Great South Road deviation would be adhered to—the present road, with a deviation to the south end, to improve alignment. The touring manager, Mr. L. E. Champtaloup, reported that satisfactory arrangements had been made for campers at the Tongariro National Park. The touring manager was authorised to prepare maps of the Taupo district from the Mataitia Rapids to the Poutu Bridge, south of Tokaanu. The total cost was estimated at £ 40. It was decided to ask the Franklin County Council to preserve approximately five acres of Peach Hill containing the Maori burial ground and trig station at Maketu Pa. At present contractors arc utilising the site for a quarry. It was decided to ask the Commissioner of Crown Lands, North Auckland, to set aside a suitable site near the Orewa Bridge as a camping ground for motorists.
