Women Apply To Go To Pole

MAWSON APPROACHED SCORES OF ADVENTURERS Reed. 0.5 a.m. FREMANTLE, Tuesday. The Maloja has arrived from London. The passengers include Sir Douglas Mawson. He has received scores of applications from women eager to sail to the South Pole, but he says he cannot take them. The British Government will hand over the exploration ship Discovery to Sir Douglas on July 1, and she will sail from London on August 1, coaling at St. Vincent, and arriving at Capetown at the end of October. The Discovery will not reach Australia until the first season’s work in the Antarctic has been completed. She will have a crew of 28 officers and men, and the scientific staff will probably number 12.
