SIR JOHN GIBSON DEAD
A FORMER GOVERNOR OF ONTARIO DISTINGUISHED SOLDIER (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) (United Service) TORONTO, Monday. The death has occurred at Hamilton, Ontario, of Major-General Sir John M. Gibson, a distinguished soldier, formerly Lieutenant-Governor of Ontario. He was 87 years of age. Sir John Morison Gibson was born at Toronto in 1842. He was educated at Hamilton, Ontario, and Toronto University. He entered The legal profession and became, a Q.C. in 1890. For many years he was one of the leaders of the Bar in his province. He held many public offices and was a director of numerous companies. In his early life he was an active member of the volunteer movement. At the close of his military career in 1903 he was colonel commanding the 15th Brigade Canadian Militia, and entered the retired as major-general. For 15 years he was president of the Canadian branch of the Red Cross Society. Sir John was Provincial Secretary of Ontario, ISS9; Commissioner of Crown Lands, 189-6; Attorney-General, 18991905; and Lieutenant-Governor of Ontario, 1908-14.
