LANIER FOR AMERICA

HOPES TO JOIN WILKINS “The Smiling South Pole Boy,” Robert White Lanier, was a passenger to the United States by the Niagara today. Lanier came to New Zealand by the Golden Cross with the intention of joining the Byrd Expedition, but while the vessel was in port he was concerned in a stabbing affray and appeared before the court. Tie was found not guilty. Lanier was to have sailed last week by the Golden State, a vessel belonging to the same line as the Golden Cross, but at the last minute he decided not to leave, and the ship sailed without him. When he left today Lanier said lie intended to try to join the Wilkins’ polar expedition.
