Sport In The Province

(From Our Own Correspondent)

Union Rugby HAMILTON The quality of football in the senior Rugby competition for the Sage Cup on Saturday was the most disappointing this season. The first round has ended with three teams being on an equal basis. The defeat of Technical Old boys, the only unbeaten fifteen, at the hands of Marist, came as a surprise. Ragged movements and perpetual mishandling made the game most uninteresting. Marist’s margin of 14 points was contributed to largely by P. Clarkin, whose kicking never fails. He is always safe on attack and defence. Delaney, T. Cassidy and Mills made the pace merry at times. Mitchell, Robinson and* Johnstone were about the only Technical players who lent a hand. The Frankton-City game, won by the former, 11-6, was little better. It was essentially a struggle between the forwards and most of the rearguard movements, especially among the winners, were individualistic. Pri scott played a wonderful game for Frankton, and should soon find higher honours. Denz, Everest and Griffiths were brilliant on occasions. Allen was a worker for City, Courtney and Mansill toiling in the forwards. By far the most sparkling game was that between the two Old Boy teams. The handling of the backs on both sides was a pleasure to watch. The margin of the A side, however, six points at a score of 21-15, was much less than was anticipated. Unless Technical or Marist make a sensational come-back. Old Boys A should win the competition. The following table gives the positions of the senior teams in Hamilton Rugby with total points for and against and competition points at the end of the first round: Tl. Pts. Com.

WAIHI On the Waihi Recreation Ground on Saturday, Waikino defeated Atheltic by 11 points to 6 in the Waihi Rugby Union Cup competition. Waikino had the measure of its opponents from the start, and thoroughly deserved its win. For the winners O’Neil, Hume, Luther and Snodgrass rendered good accounts of themselves, while Mathers, McConnell and Hales were the pick of Athletic. Tries were scored for Waikino by O’Neil (two) and Hume (one). Luther converted one. Athletic’s points were got from a penalty by Luther and an obstruction try. PAPAKURA The first round was completed on Saturday, when Drury defeated Valley at Drury by 12 points (one try and three penalties) to three points (one try) and at Papakura the home team defeated Whitford by 64 points to 3. In the junior competition, Papakura is leading, having won all its matches so far, Drury cannot field a junior team and have withdrawn. The Papakura-Wliitford match was a procession of scores. Tries were scored for Papakura by W. Francis (three), W. Rowe (three), Johnson (three), James (two), Middleton (two), L. Morrow (two), S. James (two), I. Wilson (one) and Barakai (one). T. Wilson also kicked a penalty. Francis converted two, Morrow one, Johnson one and S. Harding one, making a total of 64 to Whitford’s three points, a penalty, a good kick by Pitcher. The Whitford team is to be congratulated on its very smart appearance as it went on to the field. Each player had clean boots and gear and set an example that other clubs might well emulate. For Whitford, Goodacre and Pitcher in the backs, and Raynor in the pack were the best. The position of the teams in the Manukau Rugby competition is as follows: —

TE AWAMUTU Principal interest centred in the senior match between Te Awamutu and Rovers on Saturday. The game was willing from start to finish. Te Awamutu won by 6 points to 3. The Korakonui v. Pirongia match was fast, the former scoring 10 points in about as many minutes, and ended by beating its opponents by 23 points to S. Kay was the outstanding back for the winners, and he handled his team well. Pirongia improved in its play as the game proceeded. There was little to choose between United and Te Awamutu juniors. After an interesting game the former won by S points to 6. Mangahoe and United seniors were well matched, the score being. Mangahoe 16, United 13. Both sides indulged in good passing rushes, and the result was in doubt until the final whistle went. HUNTLY Huntly and Xgaruawahia seniors played on the Recreation Ground on Saturday. It was a disappointing contest because of too much fumbling and lack of finish to concerted movements. Time after time the locals broke away in good passing rushes and when the final pass was thrown for a certain score the ball was fumbled by the receiver or knocked on. Weather conditions were ideal and Mr. J. o*Sulliva.n refereed. Half-time score was nil and at that stage it was seen that some of the visitors were -eeling the pressure from a point of view of condition. K. Welch’s first try was a good solo effort; in fact, he was the star player of the day and is
