Surprise Win

URALLA RISES TO OCCASION Convincing Victory in Northern ONE of the least fancied candidates won yesterday’s Great Northern Steeplechase, and not only won, but captured the big stake in no uncertain fashion. This was Uralla, who incidentally was bracketed with Zircon, and no doubt this assisted to keep the dividend down, although, as it was, the return was well into double figures.

Long before the first race started yesterday the course was thronged. It seemed as if all Auckland was out to see the Great Northern Steeplechase and the other events on the second day’s card of the Auckland Racing Club’s winter programme. The sky was overcast all forenoon, and the pessimists forecasted rain before the day’s sport would be concluded. However, they were in the wrong, fortunately, and during the afternoon fitful glimpses of Old Sol were obtained. The course had dried up a bit, once more providing nice, easy going. Several horses fell in the steeplechase events, no riders being seriously injured, but one horse, Vexatious, broke a* leg when running to the old water jump and had to be destroyed. The greatest interest was taken in the big race, the Great Northern Steeplechase, and the manner in which Uralla scored so convincingly is fully dealt with elsewhere on this page. A Game Filly Once again Lucy Rose proved herself a game little filly. The spotted one was badly drawn at the barrier in the King George Handicap, but she was handy to the leaders throughout, and, shooting to the front at the distance she gave nothing else a lookin, romping home nearly three lengths ahead of the well-backed Black Duke and Standfast. Although only fourth favourite, Lucy loose’s dividend went well over double figures.

The imported horse, Bright Land, scored impressively in the Remuera Hurdles, leading all the way. He completed a useful hat trick for the wellknown Ellerslie trainer, J. Williamson, for he had saddled up the two preceding winners, Odin and Palmares. The former made the third winner for Dr. J. McGregor Grant for the two days. This turn of fortune’s wheel was enthusiastically received. Good Riding That interesting event, the Carbine Plate, was won by the liunterville owned Otairi, ridden by his owner, Mr. Iv. Duncan. This amateur rode a splendid race on his horse and fairly outclassed tho other amateur horsemen. Our best professional riders could not have given a better exhibition. The hot favourite, Maori Boy, was third, but he was very unlucky in not getting second money. Speculation was very brisk, the totalisator handling £89,758, compared with £94,392, a decrease of £4,634, quite a satisfactory return. For the two days to date £158,861 has gone through the machine, against £168,853** the decrease so far amounting to £ 9,992 a. There were no inquiries during the day. For “cribbing” at the barrier in the Members’ Handicap the first day, A. E. Didham, rider of Black Duke, was fined £2. There was a lot of barefaced “cribbing” at the post in the King George Handicap, several lirst-day offenders again being responsible. Hunt Cup Betting took a surprisingly wide range in the five-horse field for the opening event, tho Hunt Cup, Odin £1,863 and Taumai £1,485 carrying big money, the former being at a reallv royal price. Odin led all the way and finally won comfortably, although he was assisted to do so by Taumai nearly losing his rider at the second to last fence, when he was threatening danger. Odin was attended by Taumai, Terrapeen and Pikimai (Marita having fallen at the second fence) as they came over tho hill and then the double on the flat. Terrapeen crashed and Pikimai stumbled on landing at the first fence on the second circuit, and coming off the hill Taumai was threatening danger to Odin. There was not a great deal between Odin, Taumai and Pikimai at the last fence, but Odin won nicely by four lengths from Taumai, with Pikimai three lengths back. Ranfurly Handicap V itli Indolent the only defection from the Ranfurly Handicap, there was still left a good field of 19. The Te Money—Dark Prince bracket was a good favourite with £2,617, Arikitoa £1,637 and Arihana £1,537 also being backed, with the dividend-payers carrying £1,316 and £386 respectively. After some delay they got away to a £ood start, Quinsilia, Arihana and Welkne being the first to become prominent. When they had settled down Arihana and Quinsilia were in the van from Prince Val, ‘Welkne, Te Money, Catapult, Kawainga, Just Nell, Arikitoa, and Catonian. Catonian and Kawainga were the pace-makers at the five furlongs from Te Money, Arihana and Catapult. Prince Val -was prominent crossing the top, and he was actually the first into the straight from Catapult. Arihana, Quinsilia, Kawainga, Te Money and Bahama, with Palmares about fourth to last. There was a wonderful race to the judge, Palmares getting up to win by a neck from the outsider Catapult, with Te Money another neck away, and right up were Kawainga, Pompeius and Sea Cob, with Catonian, Always, Bahama, Arihana and Prince Val heading the others. Remuera Hurdles King’s Guard was made a good favourite with £3.270, with the next hurse, Kauri Park, carrying £2,241. The winner, Bright Land, carried £1.200. Bright Land went to the front and soon opened up a gap of several lengths back to Boomerday, who was leading Cybele, Kamehameha, Glenotus, Kauri Park and King’s Guard. Passing the stands Bright Land was eight lengths clear of Boomerday, Kauri Park, King’s Guard and Kamehameha, who were in close order. Going down the back Bright Land appeared to be stopping, and at the second to last fence was only two lengths clear of Kamehameha and King’s Guard, who were together just ahead of Kauri Park. Bright Land still maintained his position at,the home turn, and although challenged by Kamehameha and Kauri Park, scored decisively by two and a-half lengths from the former, with Kauri Park half

a length away third. Then followed Glenotus, Cybele and Boomerday. G.N. Steeplechase

By nearly £I,OOO over the next horse Glendowie, with £3,503, was made a strong favourite, the next best backed being Kawini (£2,532), and the Wedding March-Roman Abbey bracket (£2,472). Uralla, bracketed with Zircon, carried £792, and paid double figures. When they came to the first fence Mangani had charge from Wiltshire, Roman Abbey, Glendowie and Kawini, Comical falling. Going over the hill the first time Mangani had charge from Maunga, Zircon, Wiltshire, Roman Abbey, Uralla. Glendowie, Red Fuchsia, Kawini and King Fame. At the water jump Mangani was pulled up, the jockey apparently losing an iron. Maunga had taken charge at the hill the second time and was just in front of Wiltshire, Roman Abbey, Zircon, Uralla, Red Fuchsia and Kawini, with Vexatious, King Fame, Glendowie and Wedding March next. Red Fuchsia fell at the first fence on the top of the hill the second time. On the flat again Maunga had charge from Roman Abbey, Wiltshire, Uralla Zircon and Kawini. Vexatious fell at the old water jump and was subsequently destroyed. Zircon was pulled up at this jump. Going down the back the last time Wiltshire commenced to drop back beaten, while Uralla made a splendid run to eventually take charge at the top of the hill, where she was attended byRoman Abbey, Kawini, Glendowie, Maunga, and King Fame. Jumping safely, Uralla went on to win very comfortably by 10 lengths. In a good fight for second place, Roman Abbey beat Kawini, who was very tired, by four lengths. King Fame was 12 lengths away fourth, with Maunga next and the tired Glendowie following. Wedding March when running in the ruck fell at the sod wall, on the second circuit. King George Handicap The Ohinemuri-Billikins bracket was made a strong favourite with £3,380, tho next best backed being Black Duke £2,858 and then a long drop to Iveddar £877. The winner, Lucy Rose, carried £Bl7 and paid a. double figure return, although she was fourth favourite. Tinokoa, Valsier, Marble King and Chelone were left at the post, Billikins going out fast from Ohinemuri, Vallar, Lucy Rose, Kingfield, Whaka King, Oration, Merry Mint and Black Duke. Billikins and Ohinemuri were together crossing tho top from Kingfield, Vallar and Lucy Rose. In the straight Billikins was leading Ohinemuri, Kingfield, Oration, Vallar, King Lu, Lucy Rose and Black Duke. In a fine finish Lucy Rose won by two and a-half lengths from Black Duke, with Standfast three-quarters of a length away third. Then came Vallar, King Lu, Tho Lover, Billikins, Kingfield, Ohinemuri and High Pitch. Merry Mint fell about 100yds from homo and the rider appeared to have a nasty fall. Panmure Hurdles The public heavily supported Prince Lu to the extent of £3,293 and then came Lady Spalpeen and Golden Wedding £1,057. The _ winner carried £1,364. Prince Lu went out immediately and had’soon opened up a gap to Overhaul, who was four lengths clear of Horomea as they passed the stand, next being Golden "Wedding, Lady Spalpeen, Star Comet, Te Waka, Master Doon and Umtali. Overhaul closed up on Prince Lu as they turned into the back stretch and was followed by Lady Spalpeen, with Star Comet, Golden Wedding and Horomea next. Overhaul took charge crossing the top and was going very easily as they jumped the last fence well ahead of the tiring Prince Lu, Golden Wedding, Star Comet, Lady Spalpeen and Horomea. Golden Wedding issued a strong challenge in the run to the judge but could not reach Overhaul, who won by three lengths. Horomea was three lengths further back third. Then came Prince Lu just ahead of Star Comet, Unitali, Lady Spalpeen, Master Doon and Te Waka. Carbine Plate Maori Boy £5,576 was a hot favourite. and Archeria £2,862 was also well backed, Otairi carrying £1,691. Maori Boy took charge at the start and was joined by Lucess moving along tho back with Otairi close up. The order was the same as iliey turned for home, Otairi shooting through to win by three and a-half lengths from Glen Bay, who made a good run on the rails, with. Maori Boy a neck away third. Storm Fiend was fourtth, and then came Hakanoa, Foxhound, Mon Star, Master Clements and Taumai. Folloiving are the results-; HUNT CLUB CUP Of £400; 2i miles 1— ODIN (Dr. A.
