Lancer Wins the Otago Hurdles
GREAT STAR’S FINE EFFORT MALMSEY’S MILD SURPRISE l DUNEDIN, Monday. The weather was fine but colder than ton Saturday for the second day of the jDunedln winter meeting, but the attendance was one of the largest ever t>een at Wingatui. The course was faster than on the opening day, and provided good winter going. The totalisator handled £35,418, £3,765 more than on the second day last year. Silverstream Handicap The two Southlanders, J/ucky Xdght and Rod yea, each carried more than twice the investments of any others in the Silverstream Handicap. The former got a bad passage, and Red Sea could only finish second (her fifth in succession) to Town Major, who returned a good double figure price. Almost the rank outsider in the field in Lucky Maid was beaten by a head for second money, and returned to the enclosure badly galloped on. Provincial Handicap Royal Saxon was made a good favourite in the Provincial Handicap and pulled hard for a mile, but once inside the straight, when Emerson called on him, he failed badly. King Balboa, a good second selection, made a fine run from the half-mile post, but Malmsey, who got a lucky run on the rails at the home turn, beat him from the distance post in and won by over two lengths. Money Mine, who finished fourth after a bad run, was bought by Mr. "William Swale for 500 guineas after the race. Otago Hurdles Lancer and Troilus carried over half the investments between them in the Otago Hurdles, and they had the last lialf-mile of the race to themselves. Lancer, who was favourite, won by a length. Wharnecliffe, who at the end of six furlongs was half a furlong behind the leaders, made up a lot of leeway, but could not get nearer than fourth. Nine of Spades being third. Wairongoa Handicap Caterpillar and Great Star carried nearly half the investments in the AV airongoa Handicap, Waving Corn and Meadow Lark being also well fancied. Caterpillar was quickly out in lront and hugging the rails well, looked all over a winner, but Great Star, who had never been further back than third, wore her down in the straight and beat the filly home by a length. Taboo put in a good run at the finish, and beat Meadow Lark for third money, Wingatui Steeplechase Handy was made nearly a £SOO better favourite than Fabriano in the \v ingatui Steeplechase, but did not gallop as well as on Saturday. He led 3 or a . mil ° and six furlongs, but was then beaten and Fabriano went out in front. He led Mainspring over the water jump and last fence, and looked all over a winner, but Mainspring wore him down at the finish and beat him by half a length. Handy was a bad third. Greenstone fell at the last fence. Janefield Handicap Bulolo was made a much better favourite than lied Boar in the Janefield Handicap, but got a very bad passage in the running. Glenrowan and Kate Kelly led into the straight. Then the former took charge, but Red Boa finished very fast and beat him home bv three parts of a length, with Best Policy, who came from a long way back, a similar distance away, third. Hack Steeplechase The Forbury Hack Steeplechase was voted a good thing for the ex-hurdler Kaikahu, with only Terehu of the others well backed. Terehu was out in front until less than a mile from home, when he slipped his rider off at the logs. The favourite then took charge and ran home a very easy winner by six lengths from Rag Tag. Invermay Handicap There was heavy wagering on the Invermay Handicap, and Latin Quarter was sent out slightly better fancied than Narrative or Fairy Herald. Wayward and Ror.aki led the field to the home turn, where Fairy Herald and Quarter were running next. Latin Quarter took charge at the top of the straight and inside the distance post was challenged by Narrative and Miss Mercia. It was a great race to the post and the judge made it a dead heat between the favourite and Miss Mercia, with Narrative only a head away. hockey Suspended <\ E. Eastwood was suspended for the remainder of the meeting for crossing the field on Malmsey in the Winter
Handicap on Saturday and interfering with Ronaki. Following are the results: Silverstream Handicap, of £175; 7 furlongs.—9 Town Major, 7.9, L. Woolford, 1; 2 Red Sea, 8.11, L.
