GREAT COST OF NAVIES

WARNING TO TAXPAYERS ISSUED IN U.S. BIG ECONOMIC BURDEN (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) WASHINGTON, Saturday. The Secretary of State, Mr. H. L. Stimson, today Issued a statement warning the taxpayers of the United States against the cost involved in the contemplated naval armaments if reductions were not promptly made. He stated that the immense material burden would involve increases with every fresh discovery in warfare. Mr. Stimson said he had in his possession a memorandum from the Director of the Budget showing “that the unauthorised and contemplated programme for the construction of new ships alone amounts to £234,160,000,” to which must be added the increased budget for the operation of the ships. “With a similar exepnditure among most of the countries of the world in the next 15 years,” said Mr. Stimson, “the economic burden to the world can well be realised.”
