STEEPLECHASE DAY

Big Crowd at Ellerslie ODIN WINS HUNT CUP ELLERSLIE today was thronged with a great assembly of sportsmen from all parts of the Dominion to witness the Great. Northern Steeplechase and other events on the second day’s card of the winter fixture of the Auckland Racing Club. The course was again in good order, and the weather overcast, but fine. The opening event, the Hunt Club Cup, was captured by Odin for Dr. A. McGregor Grant, and the Ranfurly Handicap was won by Palmares who registered a good performance. coming- away from the back of the field in the straight. The imported horse, Bright Land, made no race of the Remuera Hurdles, setting a fast pace and winning from end to end, Kamehameha and Kauri Park chasing him home.

Williamson, Ellerslie. Betting took a surprisingly wide range in the five-horse field for tlie opening event, the Hunt Cup, Odin £1,863 and Taumai £1,485 carrying big money, the former being at a really royal price. Odin led all the way and finally won comfortably, although he was assisted to do so by Taumai neatly losing his rider at the second to last fence, when he was threatening danger. Odin was attended by Taumai, Terrapeen and Pikimai (Marita having fallen at the second fence) as they came over the hill and then the double on the flat. Terrapeen crashed and Pikimai stumbled on landing at the first fence on the second circuit, and coming off the hill Taumai was threatening danger to Odin. There was not a great deal between Odin, Taumai and Pikimai at the last fence, but Odin won nicely by four lengths from Taumai, with Pikimai three lengths back.

After some delay they got away to a good start, Quinsilia, Arihana and Welkne being the first to become prominent. When they had settled down Arihana and Quinsilia were in the van from Prince Val, Welkne, Te Money, Catapult, Kawainga, Just Nell, Arikitoa, and Catonian. Catonian and Kawainga were the pace-makers at the five furlongs from Te Money, Arihana and Catapult. Prince Val was prominent crossing the top, and he was actually the first into the straight from Catapult, Arihana, Quinsilia, Kawainga, Te Money and Bahama, with Palmares about fourth to last. There was a wonderful race to the judge, Palmares getting up to win by a neck from the outsider Catapult, with Te Money another neck away, and right up were Kawainga, Pompeius and Sea Cob, with Catonian, Always, Bahama, Arihana and Prince Val heading the others.
