Cabinet Authorises £lo,ooo Post Office

UPPER SYMONDS STREET INCREASE OF TELEPHONES A new post office, costing £, 10,000, is to be erected In Upper Symonds Street. The building will be one of three storeys and will be built of brick and concrete. It will replace the present post officer a converted residence, which has now become too congested for the amount of business handled there. the whole of the building will not be required for postal business the third storey will be let for offices. The Hon. J. B. Donald, PostmasterGeneral, announced on his arrival from Wellington this morning that Cabinet had given authority for the expenditure, and that work on the building would begin shortly. Excavations to a considerable depth will be required on the site of the new post office, thus making the work fairly costly. A large amount of postal business is transacted in Upper Symonds Street, which is the centre of considerable business activity. The residents of the surrounding districts find it more convenient to use this office instead of those in Wellesley and Queen Streets. Yesterday Cabinet also approved a grant for the installation of more mechanism in the Wellesley Street telephone exchange. The space was prepared some time ago, but the growing demand of Auckland for more automatic telephones requires that extra apparatus be installed as soon as possible. When the new apparatus is completed it will provide sufficient automatic telephones for many years to come.
